What a coupon code actually does

A coupon code is not magic — it is a lookup key. When you type it into a store's checkout and click "Apply," the store's system checks the code against a database of active rules: how much it discounts, which products it applies to, when it expires, and who is allowed to use it. If your order matches every rule, the discount is applied. If it doesn't match even one, the code is rejected — usually without saying exactly why.

The most common reasons a code doesn't work

• Minimum order value. Many codes only activate above a certain cart total (for example, ৳1,000 or $50). Add another small item and try again.
• Excluded products or brands. Store-wide codes often exclude sale items, gift cards, or specific brands the retailer can't discount further.
• New-customer only. A code that worked for a friend may be restricted to first-time orders on that account.
• Expired or paused. Retailers rotate codes constantly. A code posted last month may already be dead, even if the page listing it hasn't been updated.
• One code per order. Most checkout systems only accept a single promo code, so a second code field (if there even is one) won't stack on top of the first.
• Region or currency lock. Some codes are tied to a specific country's storefront and silently fail elsewhere.

Before you give up on a code

1. Re-read the terms next to the coupon, not just the headline discount.
2. Remove anything in your cart that might be excluded (sale items are the usual culprit).
3. Check the code was copied without a trailing space — a common paste error.
4. Try a different code for the same store rather than troubleshooting one that's clearly expired.
